Guide
Prop pulling without a haul-out
A diver can remove most props at the dock and hand them to a prop shop for scanning and balancing. The steps are below, plus the jobs that still need a haul-out.
When an in-water pull makes sense
- Vibration, a bent blade, a dinged edge, or a scheduled reconditioning.
The steps
- Inspect the prop and running gear underwater.
- Remove the nut, cotter and prop with a puller sized to the shaft.
- Hand the prop to a professional prop shop for scanning, balancing and pitch work.
- Reinstall with the correct key, nut torque and new cotter pin.
When you still need a haul-out
- Shaft, strut, cutlass bearing or seal work, which is normally done at a haul-out.
