Deerfield Beach sits on the Intracoastal, with the Hillsboro Drainage Canal entering the ICW at Mile 1049.9 right at the city and the Hillsboro Inlet (just south, in Pompano Beach) as the nearest ocean gateway. The Cove Marina, 1756 SE 3rd Ct, sits on the ICW near that inlet.
Deerfield Island Park sits between the Royal Palm Waterway, the Hillsboro Canal and the Intracoastal, an island reachable only by boat, with an 8.5-acre mangrove swamp and two nature trails. Part of it is still known locally as Capone Island, a name tied to the Al Capone era; the Hillsboro Canal itself carries roughly 10 navigable miles popular with recreational boating and fishing, separate from the park's own protected shoreline.
Every December, a lighted boat parade routes up this stretch of the Intracoastal from Pompano Beach's Lake Santa Barbara, passing Lighthouse Point, and ends at Sullivan Park near the Hillsboro Boulevard bridge in Deerfield Beach, the finish line for one of the longest-running holiday boat parades in the country. The Hillsboro, Atlantic Boulevard and 14th Street Causeway bridges all stay open through the parade's path that night.
