Lighthouse Point is named for the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse just to its east and is built through dozens of residential canals, about 18 miles of waterway, most dug in the 1950s and 60s with no fixed bridges blocking ocean access. Lighthouse Point Yacht Club and Port 32 Lighthouse Point Marina, minutes from the Hillsboro Inlet, are the named marinas on the water here.
Lighthouse Point's roughly 18 miles of residential canals, mostly dug in the 1950s and 60s, were built without a single fixed bridge blocking the way to open water, area real-estate guides note captains can reach the Atlantic through Hillsboro Inlet in about five minutes from almost anywhere on the canal system. That's an unusual setup: most canal towns on this stretch of coast have at least one low, fixed span a boat has to plan around.
Every December, the same lighted boat parade that starts in Pompano Beach and ends in Deerfield Beach runs up the Intracoastal past Lighthouse Point in between, with restaurants and bars along the waterway here serving as informal viewing spots. It's one of the few nights of the year the city's otherwise quiet canal-front water sees that kind of boat traffic lined up end to end.
