Aventura sits on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway with access to Dumbfoundling Bay and Little Maule Lake. No marina or public boat ramp is confirmed to sit inside Aventura's own city limits; boats tied up along this stretch of the ICW run out through the wider Intracoastal system that connects Aventura to the inlets to its north and south.

The William Lehman Causeway bridge, a fixed span at ICW Mile 1076.3, carries 65 feet of clearance connecting Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura to Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach, tall enough that almost nothing waits on it, unlike the lower bascule bridges found through most of Broward and Palm Beach counties to the north. That height is part of why this stretch of the Intracoastal, bordered by Aventura on the west and Dumbfoundling Bay to the northeast, moves faster than the canal-heavy towns further up the coast.

Aventura itself was incorporated on November 7, 1995, built out of what developers once called swampland between I-95 and the Intracoastal, the name comes from a developer's remark, "what an adventure this is going to be." The city is bordered by Hallandale Beach (Broward County) to the north and North Miami Beach to the south, with the waterway itself, not a street, forming its entire eastern edge.
